Purported Turkish (or potential Egyptian Arabic) term for male dancers who may have also engaged in male-to-female cross-dressing while dancing. May have originated from the word jank, referring to a Persian harp. In the medieval era, the term jankiyya or jannaki referred to a dancer or musician (often a harpist). It is also of note that the Persian term changī (plural: changān) means harpist as well, further solidifying this potential connection. In the early 1800s, in at least once circumstance, the terms genk and djenk were used to describe a Jewish woman who “taught dancing, and followed the wedding procession playing on a drum”. By the mid-19th century, at least one female dancer claimed that “once they [gink] called themselves cenghi, from the Turkish word cenghe, a kind of harp on which they once accompanied themselves, but which they now no longer use”. For more information, consult Kathleen W. Fraser’s Before They Were Belly Dancers: European Accounts of Female Entertainers in Egypt, 1760-1870 and Sherifa Zuhur’s Popular Dance and Music in Modern Egypt. In English slang, the term gink refers to an individual who is “awkward, ugly, foolish or clumsy”. However, before the 1950s it simply referred to a person, without derogatory connotations. It has been said that gink derives from either Scottish dialect or Turkish or Arabic via Romany. Because of the Turkish or Arabic etymology, it is potentially possible that the derogatory English term gink derived from the term referring to male dancers. Poole, Sophia Lane. gynandromorphophilia
Term used by Allen Rosenthal to refer to either (1) any relationships between cisgender men and transgender women; or (2) fetishization of transgender women by cisgender men (in the same sense as “tranny chasers” or “transamory”). Rosenthal also equates the term “gynandromorph” (from which gynandromorphophilia derives) to the slur “shemale”.
