badling

  • See bædling.

bæddel

Old English term of uncertain origin. May be a cognate with the Old High German pad (“hermaphrodite”). Oftentimes considered to be related to (or the unattested Old English root of) the Middle English badde (“wicked, wretched, bad”). It may also be related to the Old English bædan (“to defile”) although this origin is disputed (the very existence of bædan as a verb in this sense has also been called into question). It is also potentially related to the Old English term bædling.

[The author notes that they “know of no other means of explaining a string of German names of places, than by assuming the existence of a word bad or bead in Anglo-Saxon, which corresponded to the old High German pad (hermaphroditus). Such a word almost betrays itself in the extant legal expression, bädling… It seems probable that the English adjective, bad (malus) is only the same word… In by-gone times, it might have designated all hermaphrodites”.]

Her gender has never officially been noted by Nintendo and is not consistent between all appearances or translations. For instance, according to the North American instruction manual of Super Mario Bros. 2: “He [Birdo] thinks he is a girl and he spits eggs from his mouth. He’d rather be called ‘birdetta’”. This seems to indicate Birdo as being transgender, but this description was removed from later reprints of the manual. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the Birdo trophy listed her as being “gender indeterminate” and used the pronoun "it". In Mario Kart 8, Birdo appeared on the “Women of Racing Organization” banner alongside Princesses Peach and Daisy. In the British English versions of Mario Tennis Aces and Super Mario Party, Birdo is referred to using masculine pronouns. The title Captain Rainbow seemed to confirm Birdo's status as transgender, as she is jailed for using the “wrong” bathroom, as a robot jailer does not believe that she is a woman. The eponymous character of the title must then find “proof” that Birdo is a girl (which is found, but ultimately censored). birth certificate … by population … cisgender … intersex … transgender Stafford, Diane. “Transsexuals Finding Some Medical Help Here” (30 November 1977).
