Introduction

lgbtDB includes a number of mappings to different ontologies and vocabularies. These mappings should always adhere to the Simple Standard for Sharing Ontological Mappings (SSSOM) and the lgbtDB minimum criteria; it should be noted that lgbtDB mappings are narrower in scope than what SSSOM allows; therefore lgbtDB mappings can always be mapped to SSSOM but not vice versa. A mapping in lgbtDB is an instance of a reference that adheres to the minimum criteria below.

Creating Mappings

Adding an instance-of property

The simplest type of mapping is adding an instance-of property. In order to do so, typically we look for a sentence that is something along the lines of "X is a Y", where Y is a class of things. Sometimes such a statement is implied in statements of the form "X, a Y, is a...". For example, for Effex Nightclub, it is mentioned that: "Effex Nightclub (420 Central Avenue SW), Wednesday through Saturday gay dance nightclub..." which implies that it is a gay dance nightclub, which by linguistic extension, also implies that it is a gay nightclub, a dance nightclub, and a nightclub. As with Wikipedia, more reliable sources are preferred, however, in many cases they simply are not available; judge on a case-by-case basis.

Adding a subclass-of property

For classes, we tend to want to rely first and foremost on existing ontologies when we can. Existing ontologies can be identified from various repositories, such as the Ontology Lookup Service, Ontobee, NCBO BioPortal, Common Core Ontologies, AberOWL, DBpedia Archivo, Bioregistry, IndustryPortal, or BARTOC.org (among others). Occasionally, searching "[DOMAIN] ontology" will help find ontologies as well, and you can also see instances of ontologies already referenced on lgbtDB here. When using an ontological link, use the SSSOM reference formatting as seen below.

However, if you cannot find an ontology, often using the "X is a Y" technique can work as well. Dictionaries are also very useful, especially Merriam-Webster, Cambridge Dictionary, the Oxford English Dictionary, etc. Simply searching on search engines "X definition" can also help. Ideally, you'll find a reliable source for subclass-of statements, such as an encyclopedia or other reference source, but that does not always happen. Sometimes we just try our best! Ultimately, the goal is to then eventually link back, explicitly to a top-level ontology, such as SUMO, YAGO, DBpedia, BFO, DOLCE, GFO, UFO, or others. Occasionally, it is better to leave something unlinked than to add a subclass-of haphazardly. You can always use the discussion page when you have questions or thoughts!

There is one last unique situation: this is a last resort, but sometimes the hierarchy is apparent based on the wording itself, or another hierarchy. For example, 'transgender designers' are 'designers' and 'transgender persons' by definition. It the latter case, heterosexual and gay sexual orientations are, by definition, monosexual, so 'heterosexual rabbis' and 'gay priests' are implied subclasses of 'monosexual rabbis' and 'monosexual priests', respectively. Just be careful with making these assumptions, and still try to add references where you can, even if it feels obvious.
