Project:Getting Started
lgbtDB is a formalized database of LGBTQIA+ materials, concepts, people, places, things, and events. When we say that lgbtDB is formalized, we mean that it is organized as a taxonomic hierarchy of classes, of which these classes contain instances. These classes and instances have various properties to describe them and relate them to one another, and are organized in such a way as to be compatible with the Web Ontology Language (OWL) and the Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS). Unlike Wikidata, lgbtDB completely separates these hierarchies, in a way more akin to the system utilized by the Library of Congress, where concepts and real-world objects are completely separate. In practice, this means there are items for people (i.e., the person who is Harvey Milk) and concepts (i.e., the concept representing the person that is Harvey Milk).
